The individual responsible for the high school shooting in a Denver suburb, which resulted in two students being injured, has been identified as a 16-year-old boy connected to an “extremist network,” according to law enforcement on Thursday.

The incident occurred at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Evergreen High School in Evergreen, Colorado. The suspect, named as student Desmond Holly, shot one person inside the school and one outside, ultimately turning the gun on himself and later dying, the Associated Press noted, based on information from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

Despite having a significant amount of ammunition, the shooter was unable to access parts of the school where students had taken cover, due to locked doors, officials mentioned.

Over 100 officers from the Denver vicinity were dispatched to the scene at the high school, which hosts over 900 students. Officers located the shooter within five minutes of their arrival, according to Kelley.

FBI Director Kash Patel said on Thursday that the Denver field office was continuing to coordinate with partner agencies to investigate the shooting.

“Most importantly, our hearts are with the two victims injured in the shooting and everyone affected by this tragic event,” Patel stated on Thursday. “We will provide further information as it becomes available.”

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office was also the primary agency that responded to the 1999 Columbine High School shooting, which left 14 dead, AP reported.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
