Jamie Vardy has long been a vibrant figure in football, whether he’s riling up rival fans, unexpectedly blowing a referee’s whistle during a match, or delivering memorable quotes at press conferences.

And in his very first interview as a Cremonese player, the 38-year-old striker showed exactly why.

Having recently signed a one-year contract with the newly promoted Serie A team after departing from Leicester City, Vardy faced questions regarding his age and drive during his introduction.

“Here in Italy, we often doubt players nearing 40. We question their motivation and fitness. How would you address those who doubt you?” a journalist inquired.

Vardy’s reply was as sharp as his finishing.

“You must be one of the doubters,” he snapped back. “You’re one that I’ll have to prove wrong.”

Vardy replied: “Age is merely a number. As long as my legs continue to perform like they always have and feel as fresh, I’ll keep playing. Right now, there’s no sign of stopping, so I’ll push on. I’m committed to giving my best for this club.”

Cremonese, who defied expectations last season to earn promotion, have started brightly and sit joint-top of Serie A after two games.

Vardy could make his debut this Saturday in a blockbuster clash at San Siro against Inter.

Time for Vardy to put his money where his mouth is – though if his career so far has taught us anything, it’s that doubters should be worried.
