Emily Deschanel on 20 years of 'Bones,' the slow-burn romance and why fans still binge the series on Hulu

LOS ANGELES — Two decades after its premiere, “Bones” is still finding new fans on Hulu, and that longevity isn’t lost on star Emily Deschanel.

“It keeps growing and growing. It’s also hard for me to believe that it’s been 20 years, so it’s fun to see people discovering the show and then people like to watch it and then like to binge it,” she shared with On The Red Carpet while at the Televerse red carpet event.

She mentioned that numerous viewers find solace in the series during challenging periods: “A lot of people watch it when they go through hard times. It’s something familiar to people I think and comforting,” she remarked, observing that the trend has been “interesting.”

Deschanel also acknowledged the successful on-screen collaboration with David Boreanaz. “David and I naturally have a certain kind of chemistry. We understood that chemistry was crucial to the show and we worked with an acting coach to foster our connection.”

On the famous slow build between Booth and Brennan’s love story, Deschanel admitted the writers were cautious.

“They would refer to it as “curses,” when characters are brought together too soon.” Yet by the sixth season, real-life circumstances propelled the storyline. “Their hand was forced a bit because I got pregnant. They had to have my character be pregnant, and they didn’t ultimately want my character to be pregnant with anyone else’s child. So, they just had to unite us,” she explained, adding, “I think it was a good amount of time, and it wasn’t a curse.”

All 12 seasons of “Bones” are streaming on Hulu.

The Walt Disney Company is the parent company of Hulu and this ABC station.
