Furious Trump tears into Netanyahu in heated phone call after being blindsided by Qatar bombing

President Trump engaged in a tense phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday expressing strong anger over not being informed in advance about Israel’s strike targeting Hamas officials in Qatar.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the president told Netanyahu that his targeting of Hamas in Doha was not a smart decision, adding that he was furious to learn about what happened after the fact from U.S. military, instead of America’s ally in the Middle East, Israel.

Israel’s Prime Minister responded to that by saying he only had a small window of opportunity to launch strikes on Hamas – and seized the opportunity.

There was a second phone call, the WSJ reports. Trump reportedly asked Netanyahu if the attack was a success, and Netanyahu said he didn’t know.

Although Hamas leaders claimed that their members survived the attack, it was reported later that six Hamas officials were actually killed.

Senior administration officials said that Trump’s frustration with Netanyahu is snowballing – undermining him by making bold, unilateral decisions that exclude any coordination with the U.S.

After he found out about the strikes, Trump reportedly told his Middle East special envoy Steve Witkoff to alert leaders in Qatar. Qatari officials claim that the alert occurred during the attack, not before it began.

Majed Al Ansari, spokesman for Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said in a statement on X, ‘The statements being circulated about Qatar being informed of the attack in advance are baseless… The call from a U.S. official came during the sound of explosions caused by the Israeli attack in Doha.’

The Israeli attack led Hamas to withdraw from cease–fire talks. Proving more trouble for Trump, it outraged Qatari officials –– key mediators in the U.S.–brokered negotiations between Hamas and Israel.

Netanyahu indicated that additional attacks on Hamas targets may be imminent. In a video statement released Wednesday, he warned, ‘I say to Qatar and all nations who harbor terrorists, you either expel them or you bring them to justice. Because if you don’t, we will.’

The White House sent a strong message during the briefing on Sept. 9, saying the target was ‘very unfortunately located in a section of Doha.’

‘Unilaterally bombing inside Qatar, a sovereign nation and close ally of the United States that is working very hard in bravely taking risks with us to broker peace, does not advance Israel or America’s goals,’ Leavitt said.

She did, however, highlight one outcome the administration views as a potential silver lining from the attack.

‘However, eliminating Hamas, who has profited off the misery of those living in Gaza, is a worthy goal,’ Leavitt said.

Israeli airstrikes struck the Qatari capital of Doha on Tuesday, in a dramatic escalation aimed at decapitating Hamas’s senior leadership.

The strikes reportedly targeted a gathering of top Hamas officials who had convened to discuss the latest U.S.–brokered ceasefire proposal for Gaza. Residents described multiple blasts rocking the city, with clouds of smoke rising over the upscale Katara district.

The Israeli military later confirmed responsibility for the operation, stating it had specifically targeted high–ranking members of the militant group.

The Israeli government did not respond to a request for comment on this story.
