Trump asks Congress for $58 million in security funding

Due to increased threats against public officials, the Trump administration has requested Congress to allocate an additional $58 million for the U.S. Marshals Service to enhance security for the executive branch and Supreme Court justices, according to a source within the administration.

The administration also supports increased funding for security for members of Congress, leaving it to lawmakers on how to allocate resources.

Congress and the White House must keep the government funded before Sept 30, when the current money allocation runs out.

This request follows the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, which may have been an act of political violence, although authorities have not publicly disclosed a motive.

Data indicates a rise in political violence. Minnesota state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed in their home in July by an individual who had been stalking the elected official. The assailant also targeted state Sen. John Hoffman and attempted to shoot his daughter, according to police reports. The most notable recent assassination attempt occurred last July against then-candidate Donald Trump during a campaign rally.
