Emergency crews were dispatched around 10:12 p.m. in response to what the Clark County Fire Department described as an 'industrial/machinery incident.' Boring Company employees told first responders that a coworker had suffered a 'crushing injury,' a fire department spokeswoman told Fortune. An 18-person rescue team used an on-site crane to lift the injured worker from the tunnel. The worker was transported to a local hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.

Tunnel boring operations at the site have since been paused pending an investigation. Nevada OSHA confirmed it has opened an inquiry into the incident after being notified by the company. The Boring Company began operating a 1.5-mile tunnel beneath the Las Vegas Convention Center in 2021.

Since then, it has extended its footprint to 3.5 miles, connecting the center to nearby hotels and resorts, namely the Wynn and Encore Resorts, with the long-term goal to create a citywide underground Loop system using Tesla vehicles. While originally pitched as a high-speed, autonomous transit solution set to carry 16 people in driverless pods at more than 600 miles per hour, current operations rely on standard Teslas with human drivers traveling at a much slower 35 miles per hour.

Safety concerns have followed the company's Las Vegas projects. Investigations by Fortune, ProPublica, and Bloomberg have documented multiple worker injuries and regulatory citations. In one case, the Las Vegas Monorail briefly shut down after Boring Company crews tunneled too close to its foundation, Fortune reported.

In response to those reports, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA), which oversees the convention center, appointed an employee to directly monitor Boring Company work. The LVCVA's CEO told Fortune earlier this year that he was not aware of any major safety issues since that change.

The company recently began testing self-driving Teslas - equipped with safety drivers - within its tunnel system . Boring is still awaiting permits from the city to start construction on a tunnel within city limits that would run below Las Vegas Boulevard. The company is also starting preparations for another tunnel system below the city of Nashville. Daily Mail has reached out to The Boring Company for comment.
