Utah Governor Spencer Cox has discussed possible motives behind the alleged actions of Charlie Kirk’s shooter, attributing them to influences from gaming and the “dark internet” culture.

At the same time, authorities are investigating whether the fact that Tyler Robinson’s roommate, who was reportedly in a romantic relationship with Robinson and undergoing a gender transition from male to female, played a role in the event last week.

“Yes, I can confirm that. It has been reported, and the FBI has verified that the roommate was romantically involved with Robinson and is transitioning from male to female,” Cox stated in a discussion with CNN’s Dana Bash on State of the Union.

“I do too, and so I just want to be careful, as I haven’t read all of the interview transcripts, and so we’ll have to wait and see what comes out.”

Cox provided further insight into the investigation, highlighting that Robinson became radicalized, potentially due to his exposure to the gaming world and “dark internet” communities.

Cox suggested things changed for Robinson after he dropped out of Utah State University.

“The change seemed to occur after he returned to southern Utah. Friends confirmed extensive gaming activities and involvement in dark corners of the internet, such as Reddit, where he delved deep. You can see the impact on the shell casings, reflecting the meme culture prevalent in society today,” he explained to NBC.

During an interview with ABC’s “This Week,” Cox also verified that Robinson’s acquaintances had jokingly interacted with him online about pictures shared by the FBI during the pursuit.

“Those conversations definitely were happening. And they did not believe it was actually him — it was all joking until he admitted that it actually was him,” he said.

Official charges, Cox said, will be filed tomorrow.
