SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — Libraries throughout the state, including several in Central Illinois, are set to receive over $28 million in funding. This generous support comes from Secretary of State and State Librarian Alexi Giannoulias.

On Monday, Giannoulias’ office revealed that these grants will be used to benefit regional library systems and literacy programs. The $28 million will be allocated for several specific purposes.

  • $18 million for the day-to-day operations of libraries and resource sharing between public, school, academic and special libraries
  • $6.7 million in literacy grants to 70 organizations that support adult, family and workplace literacy programs
  • $2.6 million to expand online catalogues and interlibrary resource sharing
  • $450,000 to provide narration of local newspaper content to individuals who cannot read standard print material due to visibility challenges or other accessibility needs
  • $50,000 to support veterans’ home libraries that provide books, magazines, computers and internet access to veterans in long-term care and their spouses.

“Supporting our libraries, which serve as fundamental pillars within our communities, is crucial for enhancing their services and programs,” stated Giannoulias in a news release. “This ensures every resident of Illinois has the opportunity to learn, grow, and explore, no matter their location, physical abilities, financial means, or educational background. Meanwhile, improving literacy rates statewide promotes personal growth and strengthens the development of our communities.”

The funding for the grants comes from combined state funds and funds from the federal Library Services and Technology Act.
