Moment driver is arrested by police after killing 'beautiful' mother

A speeding driver was arrested moments after killing a ‘beautiful’ mother-of-two in front of her children.

Hospital radiographer Anayat Ur-Rehman, 26, was captured on CCTV weaving in and out of traffic on a dual carriageway before the fatal five-car crash.

Footage shows his VW Passat smashing into a Ford Fiesta as he undertook it on the A456 in Hagley, Worcestershire.

The Fiesta flipped into the air and across the central reservation where it crashed with an Audi being driven by Abigail Hudson, 40.

The primary teacher, who was in the car with her two daughters, Ava, 10, and Isobel, 16, and her husband Ryan, was killed instantly.

Her daughter, Ava, sustained severe injuries, such as a fractured skull and a brain bleed due to the crash, which also included two additional vehicles.

Bodycam footage shows police arresting Ur-Rehman at the scene, following the incident at around 1.15pm on October 19 last year, while paramedics desperately fought to save those injured in the crash.

A court heard harrowing evidence from Isobel as she recalled listening to her little sister ‘fighting for life’.

In a statement, read out to Worcester Crown Court, she said: ‘I was sitting in the backseat with my sister.

‘Witnessing her fighting for her life and the sound of her struggling to breathe will never escape my mind.’

Ur-Rehman, of Birmingham, was jailed for eight years and eight months last Friday after admitting causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving.  He was also banned from driving for nine years.

The court heard on the day of the crash, Mrs Hudson was driving her family to a college open day for Isobel.

In her victim impact statement, the teenager said: ‘October 19th of last year was meant to be the day when I got to look around my possible future college.

‘It was supposed to be a new and exciting step for me to take with my family by my side.

‘But it wasn’t. And I was completely wrong. All because of some irresponsible person who clearly does not know how to drive safely.

‘I may have escaped the crash with minor physical injuries, but that didn’t mean I was okay at all.’

Paying tribute to his ‘beautiful’ wife, Mr Hudson said: ‘Her death has left a permanent void in our lives, and no words can truly capture the weight of that loss.

‘Since that day, our future – the one we had built together and looked forward to – has been stolen from us.

‘Our children’s lives have been irreversibly altered. Our youngest suffered catastrophic injuries in the crash.

‘She now must take medication for the rest of her life, and the scars on her face will forever serve as a daily reminder of what happened.’

Mr Hudson added: ‘The hardest part of all is knowing everything Abbi will miss. She won’t see her daughters grow up. She won’t be there for their proms, their graduations, or to see them fall in love.

‘She won’t be there on their wedding days or to hold her grandchildren. She won’t be there to celebrate another anniversary with me or grow old with me as we had always planned.

‘Every single one of those moments that should have been filled with joy will instead be marked with sadness because Abbi won’t be there.’

The court heard the crash was caused by a ‘moment of madness’ by Ur-Rehman.

Detective Constable Joe Curry, of West Mercia’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit South, said: ‘Ur-Rehman showed a total disregard for the safety of the other road users on that day.

‘We hope the tragic outcome will teach a sobering lesson about the reason for speed limits and driving regulations to anyone thinking of driving in such a thoughtless and selfish manner putting so many people at risk as he did.’
