Five police officers were shot in York County, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday afternoon, three people familiar with the matter confirmed to NBC News.

According to sources, while executing a warrant, police came under gunfire. Three officers from the Northern York Regional Police Department currently face life-threatening injuries, and an additional officer from the same department is critically injured, sources reported.

One deputy from the York County Sheriff’s Office is injured, they added.

The alleged suspect is believed to be dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the sources.

The initial emergency call was received from North Codorus Township at 2:10 p.m., as stated by Ted Czech of the York County Office of Emergency Management. The situation is being investigated by the Pennsylvania State Police, Czech noted.

A heavy police presence was on the scene and a medical helicopter was seen leaving the area when WGAL crews arrived.

A spokesperson for WellSpan York Hospital said it was treating two individuals in relation to the shooting, both of whom are in serious condition.

“Enhanced security protocols” were put in place at the hospital, the spokesperson said.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro urged people in the area to follow directions from law enforcement in a post on X.

“I’ve been briefed on the situation involving law enforcement in York County, and am on my way there now,” Shapiro wrote.

Lt. Gov. Austin Davis and Attorney General Dave Sunday urged local residents via X to avoid the vicinity, extending their thoughts and prayers to all affected individuals.

The shooting prompted a shelter-in-place order for the Spring Grove Area School District, which was lifted just before 5 p.m.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
