An Ohio man convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend, after a home invasion, will serve close to 30 years in prison before he becomes eligible for parole.

Thirty-three-year-old Tony Jackson admitted guilt to aggravated murder charges earlier in September. This admission followed his actions months prior when he appeared at the residence of 34-year-old Matyka Brown and fatally shot her. Initially, Jackson faced multiple other felony charges related to the crime, which were dropped as part of a plea agreement.

During Tuesday’s court proceedings, Jackson received a sentence of 20 years to life. Additionally, he got three years for a mandatory gun enhancement and four years due to being on probation at the crime time. He will be up for parole consideration after serving a total of 27 years.

According to Law&Crime, on February 10, Jackson came to Brown’s home but found her with a new boyfriend. He left briefly, returning to unlawfully enter the house while Brown and her daughters, ages 9 and 14, were present.

Jackson threatened the trio with a firearm before shooting Brown. Her daughters escaped to a neighbor’s home for assistance, but not before one of them witnessed the lethal second gunshot that killed Brown.

The neighbors called 911, but it was too late to save Brown. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Just two weeks prior to the murder, Jackson had been released from prison, having completed a sentence for armed robbery. The murder transpired months following his arrest for previously strangling Brown.

Local CBS affiliate WHIO spoke to Brown’s mother, Melinda Grissom, who was at the sentencing. Grissom told WHIO, “There is some justice because he’s behind bars, but 27 years is not enough. It’s not.” She added, “He’ll still be kind of young when he gets out. My daughter, she won’t be here.”
