In NORTH CODORUS TOWNSHIP, Pa., authorities were probing a Thursday shooting incident that had claimed the lives of three officers and injured two others in southern Pennsylvania the previous day.

The violence erupted in rural York County as officers followed up on a domestic-related investigation that began on Tuesday.

Authorities have not yet released the identities of the three officers who were killed.

Officials said police killed the shooter and that there is not any threat to the community.

The two injured officers were in critical but stable condition at York Hospital, authorities said.

The officers were following up on an investigation that began on Tuesday, according to Paris, who characterized the case as “domestic-related.”

Following the tragic events, community members gathered, waving American flags and paying respects as a convoy of police and emergency vehicles made its way to the coroner’s office.

Governor Josh Shapiro denounced the attack at a press briefing, lamenting the tragic loss of lives. The Attorney General, Pamela Bondi, described the violence against law enforcement as a serious issue afflicting society.

This marked one of the most lethal days for Pennsylvania’s law enforcement in recent history. A similar tragedy struck in 2009 when three officers in Pittsburgh were killed in an ambush during a domestic call by an assailant wearing a bulletproof vest.

Police agencies around the area conveyed their sympathies on social media. Meanwhile, individuals paid tribute by placing flowers at the Northern York Regional Police Department’s headquarters.

The investigation into the shooting will cover multiple locations in York County, state police said in a statement.

Agents with the ATF Harrisburg Field Office and the FBI are assisting at the scene.

“Our prayers are with the officers, their families, and the entire York County community,” FBI Director Kash Patel said in a statement.

The 911 call reporting the incident was logged shortly after 2 p.m. on Wednesday, prompting a swift response from several police and emergency medical units, according to a York County emergency management official.

The shooting erupted in the area of North Codorus Township, about 115 miles (185 km) west of Philadelphia, not far from Maryland, authorities said.

Dirk Anderson heard “quite a few” shots from his home across the street from the shooting, he said. He saw a helicopter and police arrive.

The emergency response unfolded on a rural road in south-central Pennsylvania. Some 30 police vehicles blocked off roads bordered by a barn, a goat farm and soybean and corn fields.

Family members of those killed were grieving but proud of their loved ones, said Shapiro.

Another officer in the area was killed in February, when a man armed with a pistol and zip ties entered a hospital’s intensive care unit and took staff members hostage before a shootout that left both the man and an officer dead.
