SAVANNAH, Ga. () — On the six-month anniversary of 60-year-old Darren Lewis’s death, his wife sat in a Chatham County courtroom.

Kathy Lewis watched her husband’s suspected killer, 42-year-old Kenneth Gordon, plead not guilty to all charges on Thursday.

Gordon is alleged to have escaped from Savannah Police, speeding down Liberty Parkway and ultimately crashing into Darren Lewis’s car. This collision tragically resulted in Darren’s death.

Gordon is facing felony charges for homicide by vehicle, fleeing from police, hit and run resulting in a death and other misdemeanor charges.

Kathy, in an exclusive conversation following the arraignment, expressed her frustration: “I’m very appalled and very upset. How do you plead not guilty when a life has been taken?”

An incident report from the Savannah Police Department (SPD) indicates Gordon was driving a vehicle of interest related to a separate shooting investigation on March 18.

When police tried to pull Gordon over, he fled. The high-speed chase ended when he ran into Lewis’s car on Liberty Parkway.

“I’m just praying someone is held accountable for this,” Kathy stated. “I am appalled by the whole City of Savannah, as not one person has reached out to me.”

Following this event, there has been an investigation into SPD’s use of force and pursuit policies. Kathy expressed a desire for officers to have used alternative methods to apprehend Gordon.

“It’s easier with modern technology,” Kathy remarked. “As I said before, [officers] had eyes on the vehicle with the helicopter. They didn’t just take one life, they took two, because my life is shattered, in pieces.”

Gordon will be back in court on Oct. 31 for his jury trial.

Since his death, the Lewis family started the Darren Lewis Foundation.

They have an upcoming event to collect Christmas gifts for children in need this year. The collection event is slated for Dec. 6 at 6 p.m. at the Holiday Inn in Pooler.
