An Indiana woman who was found by police with her dead toddler in the driveway of her home faces charges of child neglect.
The Shelbyville Police Department announced through a news release obtained by local Fox station WXIN that Sophie Igou was taken into custody late Wednesday night. This followed a call to her residence. The release indicates Igou, whose age was not mentioned, was found in the driveway of her home at the Westar trailer park in Shelbyville when law enforcement arrived.
Alongside her was her 22-month-old child, who was unresponsive.
Upon arrival, officers attempted to administer emergency care to the child, but they “quickly determined that the child was deceased,” as stated in the release.
The investigation into the child’s death continues, the police said, including performing an autopsy. No additional details regarding the child’s condition or potential causes of death were released by the authorities.
Igou was arrested on-site and charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in death. The police press release noted that further charges might be forthcoming, depending on the investigation’s findings and the outcomes of the child’s autopsy. Local CBS station WTTV conveyed that the Shelby County Coroner’s Office scheduled the autopsy for the child on Friday.
