SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. – A conservation organization has initiated legal action to halt Florida’s first black bear hunt in over ten years, asserting that state wildlife officials relied on outdated population figures to support the controversial decision.

Bear Warriors United seeks to block the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission from proceeding with the 23-day hunt, scheduled to begin Dec. 6.

The group argues that killing 187 bears would cause “imminent and irreparable harm” to the Florida black bear population.

“Conservation requires more than just a hunting plan. It should be grounded in science. Responsible and compassionate bear management is essential,” stated Raquel Levy, an attorney for Bear Warriors United.

The lawsuit alleges the commission violated legal requirements and relied on outdated bear population numbers in approving the hunt.

An FWC spokesperson said the agency does not comment on active litigation.

The commission has already begun accepting permit applications for the hunt.
