On July 24, 2024, the Savannah Police Department (SPD) received a tip-off that Rawls was at a gas station. Upon their arrival, he departed in a vehicle. A traffic stop was subsequently conducted by the officers, and Rawls was identified as a passenger in the car.

After searching the vehicle, a firearm was discovered in the passenger side glove box.
