A Nevada man appeared in a Las Vegas court after pleading guilty to fatally shooting his stepfather over an argument about toiletries.

On Thursday, 23-year-old Alex Renteria received a prison sentence ranging from four to ten years after admitting to manslaughter charges. Renteria confessed to shooting his stepfather, 47-year-old Christopher Brian Harris, in October 2024 following an incident where Renteria discovered his bathroom items in the trash and believed Harris was responsible for discarding them.

The two men had a verbal argument that escalated into violence, and only one of them survived the night of Oct. 22, 2024.

KLAS, the local CBS station, covered the courtroom proceedings where Renteria, along with several family members, addressed the court. Before the judge issued the sentence, Renteria claimed that Harris’s alleged drinking problem instilled fear in him. Renteria stated, “I asked him to leave me alone, and out of fear, I picked up a firearm to deter him. I never intended to shoot him.”

The victim’s son, Brian Harris, refuted his stepbrother’s allegations, emotionally asserting, “My father loved him like a son. It’s appalling that you would disgrace him by calling him a drunk.”

Per an arrest report obtained by KVVU, the local Fox channel, from the incident, Renteria informed the police that upon returning from work, he found his toiletries discarded. Confronting Harris led to a verbal altercation that escalated. The report noted that Renteria retrieved a Glock handgun from his room during the confrontation.

Subsequently, Renteria returned to his room to get a larger weapon, an AR-15 rifle. Harris followed him, prompting Renteria to fire a warning shot into a wall. When Harris attempted to disarm him, Renteria shot Harris in the hand and leg. Renteria confessed to police uncertainty over the exact number of shots fired.

Harris was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

According to the arrest report, police asked Renteria why he did not just close his bedroom door to end the fight. He answered that “it would have likely just made things weird the next day.”
