A man in California will likely spend the rest of his life behind bars for killing his sister”s ex-boyfriend and then fleeing the country for years.

Raymond Lynde, age 33, received a sentence of 51 years to life imprisonment for the murder of Ariel Burquez, age 23, as declared by the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office earlier this week.

The July 2020 killing took place outside of Burquez’s apartment complex in Chula Vista.

Following his release from a 12-year incarceration for multiple armed robberies in Orange County, located approximately 100 miles northwest, Lynde “ambushed” Burquez, according to the DA’s office. The convicted individual proceeded to stab Burquez 28 times, effectively “leaving him for dead.”

Burquez is said to have “collapsed at his front door” and died.

Lynde then discarded the murder weapon, concealed bloodstained clothing, and fled to Mexico, residing there for nearly two years before being located. The U.S. Marshals Service announced his apprehension in May 2022.

“This was a brutal murder driven by hostility and vengeance,” stated San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan. “I hope today’s sentencing provides closure and some justice for Mr. Burquez’s family. Our gratitude extends to our law enforcement partners in Mexico for assisting in bringing the defendant back to San Diego to face justice for his horrific crime.”

During the trial, Lynde’s sister testified that she had dated Burquez for about six months between 2018 and 2019. After the breakup, Burquez reportedly “vandalized property belonging to Lynde’s sister and allegedly fired at her weeks before the murder,” according to the DA’s office.

Lynde reportedly admitted that he stabbed Burquez but claimed he did it in self-defense. The jury was not convinced.
