Preparing for flu season in Central Illinois; tips and tricks

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — As the autumn season approaches, healthcare professionals in Central Illinois are advising residents to begin preparing for the upcoming flu season.

OSF Healthcare said staying healthy starts with simple things everyone has heard before; like washing hands or covering coughs and sneezes.

They recommend getting a flu shot at any time, as it can help enhance your body’s ability to combat the virus. People with other health conditions are also encouraged to consider getting RSV vaccines.

The company mentioned you should also know what to do if you do end up feeling sick.

“If you experience a mild case, you might feel slightly unwell with mild flu or cold symptoms, potentially having a low-grade fever,” said spokesperson Tim Ditman. “In such cases, taking Tylenol or Motrin, staying hydrated with plenty of fluids, and resting is advised. However, if you start facing breathing difficulties, it’s crucial to consult a healthcare professional.”

Ditman mentioned that while OSF is uncertain about the severity of this year’s flu season, last year’s was notably harsh, with 20% of emergency room visits in Illinois attributed to respiratory illnesses.
