Decatur Fire Dept. responds to Saturday night house fire

DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — A fire on Friday night left one person with minor injuries and displaced three residents in Decatur.

The Decatur Fire Department was alerted to the fire at around 10:10 p.m. at a home on Maple Court. Engine 3 was the first to arrive and discovered heavy smoke billowing from the building. It was determined by the people there that the fire originated in the basement.

A Second Alarm was called, bringing more units to assist. Firefighters quickly contained the primary blaze in the basement by deploying a hose line.

Additional teams provided essential support such as ventilation, conducting searches, managing utilities, and maintaining a sustainable water supply.

One resident re-entered the house in an attempt to find a dog and put out the fire, resulting in minor injuries. This individual was assessed by Abbott Ambulance but declined further care. All residents were safely out before the arrival of the fire department.

Initially, one person was thought to be missing but was later accounted for outside the home during the fire. Fortunately, no other injuries to civilians occurred, although the home lacked functional smoke detectors.

This fire was confined to the home of origin and resulted in damage to both the basement and kitchen. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. As a result of the extent of the damage to residence, the occupants of this house have been displaced.

With the Decatur Fire Department, Battalion 1, Engine 1, Truck 1, Engine 3, Engine 4 and Engine 5 were the initial responding units on scene. Decatur Fire Engine 6, Truck 2, 312, 313, 314 and 703 were the additional responding units during this incident.

Agencies that assisted Decatur Fire on scene included Ameren, Abbott Ambulance, Decatur Police and CIRDC dispatchers.
