Monticello's Bridge St. slows down, new speed limit in effect

MONTICELLO, Ill. (WCIA) — A Central Illinois city is citing safety issues as the reason for a speed limit decrease.

Bridge Street in Monticello now has a speed limit change from 45 miles per hour to 35 mph. City officials cited ongoing concerns for this decision.

This new speed limit affects only part of Bridge Street, specifically from Front Street to the eastbound exit of Interstate 72. Key areas like the intersections at Fisler Road and County Farm Road were highlighted as problematic.

The city noted that visibility issues in these areas make it difficult for drivers to turn safely with speeding traffic. The intersection of Foothill Road and Bridge Street also raised concerns.

People who live close to Bridge Street felt like this change was warranted.

“Living on that part of Bridge Street near Foothill and the bus stop, it’s dangerous,” said Susan Kesselman. “Pedestrians struggle to cross with cars speeding along Bridge Street.”
