US President Donald Trump stated on Monday that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will inform doctors that taking acetaminophen during pregnancy “may significantly increase the risk of autism.”

“They are strongly recommending that women limit Tylenol use during pregnancy unless medically necessary,” he said.

Tylenol is available for sale in Australia, and there are currently no active safety investigations into its use during pregnancy.

Addressing the nation from the White House, Trump cautioned expectant mothers against using acetaminophen, commonly known as Tylenol, “throughout their pregnancy.” He also mentioned unfounded worries about vaccinations.

Under intense scrutiny from Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr’s Make America Healthy Again initiative, the Trump administration is facing demands for answers regarding the notable rise in autism cases in the US over recent years.

Experts say the rise in cases is mainly due to a new definition for the disorder that now includes mild cases on a “spectrum” and better diagnoses.

Experts argue that no singular cause for the disorder exists. They claim that this discussion appears to dismiss and undermine the extensive scientific research into the genetic and environmental influences that could contribute to autism.

The announcement is the latest step the administration, driven by Kennedy and his supporters, has taken to reshape America’s public health landscape.

Apart from reductions in federal health budgets, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has faced turmoil over Kennedy’s vaccine-related policies.

Last week, a prominent immunization committee, populated by individuals who have critiqued vaccines and enlisted by Kennedy, revised vaccination guidelines for COVID-19 and other illnesses.

This is a breaking news story. More to come …
