Witness Reports Murder Suspect Showed Him Decomposing Body in Trash Bag

A South Carolina man has been arrested for the murder of a man whose body was found in pieces last month.

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office has announced that 21-year-old John Lucas Rice is facing charges for the murder of Kevin Scott Brookshire, who disappeared in December 2021, as reported by WHNS.

According to the sheriff’s office, they received tips on August 22 from the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office which suggested that Rice had led a witness to see a decomposing body inside a trash bag in a backyard located in Cherokee County. Deputies responded with cadaver dogs, discovering human remains which were confirmed to belong to Brookshire.

Multiple pieces of the body were found in different locations, officials said.

Rice was apprehended in Shelby, North Carolina, approximately 20 miles from the state border, and reportedly admitted to the murder of Brookshire. He agreed to waive an extradition hearing, resulting in his return to Cherokee County.

Rice is being held without bond, WYFF said.
