Video shows youth baseball players running for cover as shots ring out at game

Several individuals have been pinpointed as suspects following gunfire at a Houston-area youth baseball game on Sunday, which resulted in pandemonium as players and coaches rushed for safety.

Authorities in Waller County, Texas, revealed that three people discharged firearms towards the Ameripark youth baseball field, commonly referred to as The Rac, located in Katy.

Footage of the unsettling event captures 12-year-old Texas Colts players in light blue uniforms sprinting to find shelter amid flying bullets. A 27-year-old coach sustained an injury when a bullet ricocheted off a post, necessitating hospital treatment; he was released later that evening.

“I was alone because I was set to pitch, and as I walked out of the dugout to gather my things, a mere five feet away, I suddenly heard gunshots,” he informed FOX26 Houston. “Initially, I was unaware the shots originated from the forest. I feared an active shooter scenario and promptly sought cover.”

One coach likened the shooting to being in Afghanistan, while another said the adult coaches were purely focused on the safety of the children.

“The main concern was the 12-year-old kids. During the incident, our primary thought wasn’t for our own safety but on getting the children down and behind a brick wall,” stated Texas Colts coach Alex Smith.

The Rac put out a midafternoon statement acknowledging the seriousness of the shooting.

“Protecting our players, families, coaches, staff, and community is our utmost priority. This incident has deeply unsettled us, and we are concentrating on supporting the injured coach, his family, and everyone else impacted,” expressed the Rac. “We are collaborating with law enforcement and conducting our internal examination. Updates will be provided as we receive more details. All activities are currently on hold.”

“We are grateful for the response of local authorities, the medical team on site, and the outpouring of care from our community.”
