The United Kingdom’s ambassador to the United States, Peter Mandelson, was fired September 11th, following the release of emails revealing a deeper and more extensive relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein than previously known.

Key Points:

Prime Minister Keir Starmer requested Mandelson’s withdrawal, pointing to newly found communications that depicted Mandelson referring to Epstein as “my best pal” and voicing support for Epstein even after his conviction in 2008. The emails show Mandelson encouraged Epstein to dispute the conviction and offered unwavering support despite the seriousness of Epstein’s offenses.

Mandelson, a senior Labour Party politician and former European Commissioner for Trade, expressed regret over his association with Epstein, referring to the financier as a “charismatic criminal liar” and showing empathy toward Epstein’s victims.

The Foreign Ministry noted that the disclosure of Mandelson’s emails provided new information that significantly altered the perception of his relationship with Epstein at the time he was appointed. Mandelson was promptly relieved from his ambassadorial role.
