Traffic during the United Nations General Assembly in New York can be brutalâeven for presidents.Â
French President Emmanuel Macron suddenly found himself stranded on the sidewalk Monday night.Â
This was due to President Donald Trump’s motorcade having secured the street. Macron contacted Trump by phone to humorously grumble about the traffic jam.
“How are you? Guess what? I’m waiting in the street because everything is closed for you,” Macron says on the call.
Eventually, the barricades opened for pedestrians, but not for cars.Â
Macron had to keep the call going while walking to the French embassy.Â
And if that wasn’t unusual enough, a bystander seized the opportunity for a quick kiss with the French president.Â
Macron’s walk through the Big Apple took about a half hour.
The French president used his trip to New York to formally recognise the “State of Palestine” on behalf of France at the UN.
Australia, Canada, the UK and Portugal have all made similar announcements.
