Alleged red flags that made mum suspicious of woman texting teen son

A teenage boy pulled away from his family while reportedly being manipulated by a woman almost twice his age, who now faces charges related to abusing him, the court was informed.

Jessica May Nakkan, 30, from Holt, Canberra, is facing numerous charges due to an alleged involvement with a boy under the age of 16 earlier this year.

She has denied eight charges, which include continuing a sexual relationship with a minor under special care, grooming, and possessing child exploitation material, along with three counts of indecency involving a minor and two counts of engaging in sexual acts with a minor under 16.

Court documents outline the shifts in behavior the boy’s mother claims to have seen in her son before discovering the alleged involvement, and describe the troubling evidence police uncovered in Nakkan’s vehicle at the time of her arrest on May 31.

Nakkan, then 29, allegedly began messaging the teen on a daily basis after the pair met and exchanged numbers.

The boy’s mother grew worried about a noticeable drop in his mental well-being as he spent less time with the family and more on his phone, reportedly interacting with Nakkan.

He also declined to join a fishing trip with his father during the school holidays, organized months before, opting to spend time with Nakkan instead, as alleged in court documents.

It’s alleged that Nakkan lavished the boy with gifts of clothing and video games, sent him sexualised messages about how much she loved him, and instructed the teen to use multiple social media platforms to keep their relationship a secret, reported the Canberra Times.

It’s alleged she kissed the boy numerous times, indecently touched his body, and orally raped him twice.

The boy’s mother eventually uncovered the alleged relationship in May when she found messages and videos of the pair on his laptop and reported it to police.

When police executed a search warrant of Nakkan’s home days later, they allegedly found child exploitation material on her mobile phone featuring the pair.

Police also searched Nakkan’s car, where they allegedly found the teen’s birth certificate, wallet, identification documents and school uniform.

It’s alleged that Nakkan made a number of admissions during a police interview, including that she had told the boy she loved him, but claimed it was in more of a parental or guardianship way.

She also allegedly admitted the pair kissed numerous times, exchanged explicit photos and videos, and that she orally raped him twice and knew he was under 16.

‘She has always known that what was happening was not okay and was not legal,’ police claim in the court documents.

Nakkan returned to ACT Magistrates Court last week to seek variations to her ongoing bail conditions, which include a strict 24-7 curfew.

Her lawyer Himangi Ticku, asked for the curfew to be removed as she may soon be moving house, The Region reported.

The prosecutor opposed the proposed removal of the curfew, claiming there had been a clear power imbalance in the alleged relationship and that the pair tried to disguise it.

Magistrate Glenn Theakston agreed to keep the curfew in place.

It means Nakkan can only leave home alone for work or attend legal appointments and must be in the company of an approved person when leaving her home at any other time.

Nakkan will return to court on October 13.
