TROUP, Texas (KETK)– 44 dogs were seized from an East Texas property on Friday morning at what Smith County investigators believe is a puppy mill.

At around 11:45 a.m., the Smith County Sheriff’s Office reported that first responders were called to a medical emergency in the 19200 block of FM 345 near Troup. Upon arrival, medical staff noticed a strong smell of feces and saw numerous dogs, both in kennels and roaming free.

Investigators from Smith County discovered that the dogs had been neglected for at least twelve hours, lacking proper care, food, or water.

“Smith County Animal Control went to the scene and seized 44 dogs, which they then took to the Smith County Animal Control Shelter,” officials stated. “Among these, 41 dogs seem to be pure-bred Whippets and 3 are likely pure-bred Standard Poodles. Many of the dogs showed signs of malnutrition, skin issues, excessively long nails, and possible gastrointestinal problems.”

According to Angel Reynolds from Smith County Animal Control, the shelter’s veterinarian is scheduled to assess the rescued dogs on Monday. The dogs’ ages vary from puppies to adults.

“Sheriff’s Investigators are thoroughly investigating this situation, which is suspected to be a puppy mill,” officials added. “Currently, there is no information on if or when these dogs will be available for adoption. They are now receiving proper nourishment, healthcare, and socialization.”
