The news relates to the tragic incident at an apartment complex in Columbus, Ohio, where a young boy named Cartier Smith, aged 3, accidentally fatally shot himself on September 22. Background footage shows the location, while inset images depict Carley Dials and Sean Perrin, the individuals connected to the case.

An Ohio woman was charged with involuntary manslaughter after her 3-year-old son fatally shot himself with an unsecured gun while she slept.

Carley Dials, aged 29, was able to post bail on Tuesday after her arrest the previous day. The incident occurred when her young son, Cartier, accessed a firearm allegedly brought into the home by 31-year-old Sean Perrin. As stated in the Columbus Division of Police’s report, officers were called via a 911 call by Dials on Monday morning. Upon arrival, they discovered Cartier with a gunshot injury, leading to his immediate transport to the hospital, where he was later declared deceased.

Reports from local CBS station WBNS, substantiated by court documents, revealed that Perrin departed the scene prior to police intervention. Authorities indicated their findings during the investigation showed Perrin had allegedly introduced the firearm into Dials’ residence.

During her police interview, Dials recounted finding the firearm shortly before retiring to bed around 3 a.m. on Monday. She mentioned she attempted to conceal the weapon between her bed’s mattress and the wall prior to sleeping.

A few hours later, just prior to 9 a.m., young Cartier entered the room where Dials and Perrin were asleep. After retrieving the firearm, Cartier climbed onto the bed and accidentally discharged it upon himself. In response, Dials called 911 while Perrin reportedly left the scene. Despite being promptly taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Cartier succumbed to his injuries less than an hour following the incident.

WBNS reported that an older child was taken into the custody of Franklin County Children’s Services.

Sean Perrin, previously detained in March for parole violations relating to a 2019 gun-related conviction, was subsequently captured by authorities. He now faces charges of possessing a firearm while under disability in addition to parole violations. Perrin is currently held at James A. Karnes Correction Center, with bail set at $750,000.

Dials was charged with involuntary manslaughter and booked into the Franklin County Jail. Her bond was set at $50,000, which she posted on Tuesday following her court appearance.

Both Dials and Perrin are due in court for a preliminary hearing on Oct. 2.
