A man responsible for setting fires in California last year has been sentenced to over 19 years in prison, as reported by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California.

During sentencing, the Court labeled Goonan as a “domestic terrorist” and determined he had committed a felony intending to support a federal crime of terrorism, according to the office.

In January, Casey Robert Goonan confessed to a charge of deliberately damaging or destroying property that was used in or impacted interstate commerce using fire or explosives, as detailed in the release.

The release, referring to “a plea agreement made in a public court,” indicates that on June 1, 2024, Goonan placed a bag filled with Molotov cocktails under the fuel tank of a University of California Police Department vehicle and ignited it, causing the vehicle to catch fire.

Senior U.S. District Judge Jeffrey S. White mandated that Goonan serve an additional 15 years of supervised release following his imprisonment, pay restitution amounting to $94,267.51, and a $100 special fee, as mentioned in the press release. It also notes that Goonan has been detained since he was initially arrested on state charges on June 17, 2024.
