Households throughout the UK are preparing for another financial challenge this autumn as the energy price cap is anticipated to increase again, coinciding with cooler temperatures and a heightened need for heating. Ofgem has recently announced a 2% hike in the energy price cap for the period from October to December 2025, which will raise costs by approximately £2.93 monthly for the average household.

This rise is especially concerning for disabled individuals, who frequently encounter much higher energy expenses. With day-to-day living already more expensive due to essential needs such as heating for health reasons or powering medical devices, there is mounting worry about how many will cope. Despite bills remaining high, one charity is offering free assistance that could be transformative.

Scope, a disability equality charity, is now urging those who are disabled or have long-term health conditions to reach out to their free Disability Energy Support service. Staffed with specialists, Scope provides guidance on a variety of issues such as managing finances, understanding gas and electricity bills, and assisting in accessing benefits by connecting people with their suppliers.

The service is available to any disabled person, as well as households with one or more disabled residents, across England, Scotland, and Wales. Alex Hazell, head of services at Scope, stated: “Life is more expensive when you’re disabled. We’re aware many individuals are grappling with large energy bills and accruing debt, unsure of where to seek help.”

“It’s an extremely stressful and daunting situation, and with the prospect of high bills again this winter, we want people to recognize they are not isolated. Our skilled advisers will discuss your circumstances and offer individualized support for whatever challenges you’re encountering.”

Since commencing in November 2020, the service has aided over 35,000 households, saving them an estimated £6.6 million. Users of the service can anticipate phone consultations lasting up to 45 minutes with an energy adviser or receive email support featuring advice customized to their particular situations. Subsequently, they will be provided with a personalized action plan.

This plan will ‘set out steps’ that should be taken to resolve any problems that are being faced. According to Scope, it may include advice on contacting other services for further advice and support. If needed, adjustments can be made such as video calls with British Sign Language interpreters and language interpreters if people wish to talk in a language other than English.

There are other platforms out there that also provide free, help such as Citizens Advice which has been offering confidential advice online, over the phone and in person for the last 85 years. They give advice on benefits, work, debt and money, consumers, housing, family, law and courts, immigration and health. Another is Disability Rights UK which offer guidance and resources such as a benefits calculator, helplines and information for those who need it.
