ORLANDO, Fla. – For the first time in its 43-year history, Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida is hosting a 24-hour hunger relief marathon.

The “Hunger Never Sleeps” event began on Thursday at the organization’s distribution center on Mercy Drive, where hundreds of volunteers tirelessly worked to sort and pack over 100,000 boxes of food in just one day.

Second Harvest distributes about 300,000 meals each day across seven counties in Central Florida. Leaders note that the need for food has remained steady since the COVID-19 pandemic.

“People in our community face hunger 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all year round,” said Dan Samuels, director of philanthropy. “The aim of Hunger Never Sleeps is to raise awareness, motivate our community to get involved, and support our neighbors in thriving, regardless of the time of day or year.”

Organizers suggest those unable to volunteer can participate by making a $24 donation, symbolizing 24 hours of action.

“The fact is, one out of every seven of our neighbors right here in Central Florida is at risk of going to bed hungry at night,” Samuels explained. “That represents more than half a million individuals who may be unsure of their next meal.”

Second Harvest said both donations and volunteer support remain critical as the nonprofit works to keep pace with the ongoing demand.
