The United Nations has reinstated nuclear sanctions on Iran today, intensifying the strain on Tehran’s struggling economy as the broader Middle East remains tense due to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict in the Gaza Strip.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi made a last-minute attempt to prevent the sanctions during the UN General Assembly gathering this week in New York.
Efforts by China and Russia to stop the sanctions failed as well.
August 8, 2025 — France, Germany, and the United Kingdom issue a warning to Iran through a letter, stating that UN sanctions will be reapplied if a “satisfactory solution” to the nuclear issue is not found by August 31.
