URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — The City of Urbana has received a grant to help launch a literacy program championed by Mayor DeShawn Williams.
On Friday, the city announced the acquisition of a grant from the African American Mayors Association (AAMA) to finance an online financial literacy initiative for its citizens. This initiative is further backed by the Sootchy Charitable Foundation, a nonprofit entity.
The online platform created by Sootchy offers an engaging, user-friendly interface to aid participants in developing essential financial skills. The grant will facilitate the launch of the Mayor Williams Financial Literacy Program, a digital series accessible via computer and mobile, tailored for individuals aged 21-64, and available at no cost.
This program features six self-directed topics centered around practical money management, covering areas such as budgeting, understanding credit, strategies for reducing debt, and planning for future needs with college savings plans. Participants who successfully complete all six topics will receive a certificate of completion from the City of Urbana and will be invited to a recognition ceremony.
“Financial knowledge is power,” stated Mayor Williams. “By providing our residents with practical tools to make informed choices and secure long-term financial well-being, we’re empowering families to thrive, encouraging neighborhoods to prosper, and strengthening Urbana for everyone’s benefit.”
