SCREVEN COUNTY, Ga. () – The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into two deaths in Screven County after the Screven County Sheriff’s Office sought the agency’s help.

The agency stated that law enforcement officers responded to a call about a car accident on Highway 301 South, located a few miles outside the Sylvania City limits, on Saturday, September 27, at around 3:15 a.m.

Upon arrival, officers discovered Leon Tolbert Jr., 30, of Sylvania, Ga., and Brandon Counts, 30, also of Sylvania, Ga., inside the vehicle, each having suffered a gunshot wound. Tolbert, Jr. was declared dead at the scene, and Counts was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment but passed away shortly thereafter.

The Georgia State Patrol arrived at the location and concluded that the car was not involved in a collision but had veered off the road. A handgun was found in the car, according to the GBI.

The bodies of Tolbert, Jr and Counts will be taken to the GBI Crime Lab in Pooler, Georgia for autopsies.
