Ford Co. group raising awareness for Down Syndrome

In Paxton, Illinois, the conclusion of Down Syndrome Awareness Month marked a special celebration by a local group committed to honoring and educating about diverse abilities.

The Paxton Area’s Down Syndrome Awareness group spearheaded the event, inviting the local community to join a purposeful quarter-mile walk. The gathering also featured complimentary meals, games, and prizes for attendees.

Initiated a few years ago by local parents, the event was designed to enhance community understanding of Down Syndrome. Organizers emphasized their continual message that “Inclusion Matters,” highlighting its importance beyond just the event day.

“We’re reaching out to those who may not fully grasp what Down Syndrome entails or its impact on individuals, demonstrating that they share more similarities with us than differences,” explained Darla Schall, an event co-organizer.

She further noted that donations were being collected to support educational resources in schools, focusing on increasing awareness of various abilities, including Down Syndrome.
