AUGUSTA, Ga ()- Some much needed resources distributed Saturday at the Hope After Helene event in Augusta.

Volunteers included staff from the Richmond County School System and members of the Greater Young Zion Baptist Church.

Bags of groceries were handed out at Glenn Hills Middle School, one of four school distribution sites.

Principal Marvin Washington said that last year the school provided hot meals for the community after the area was affected by the hurricane, and when asked if they would assist again, they were more than willing to do so.

“We just came out, we came together, and everyone did what they needed to do to ensure our families had some food to eat. Many of the volunteers who assisted us last year returned this year as well. And all the churches that helped organize this, it’s been a fantastic collaboration,” Washington explained.

Shontae Boyd, District 4 Richmond County School Board Member was thre too.

“The Richmond County School System is participating because we know we still have students who are in significant need, as well as staff in the community. So we wanted to come out and help, distribute the food supplies, groceries, essentials and just ensure that everyone knows the school system is trying to play its part and be available in any way we can be,” she said.

Nola Waltower, a freshman at Faith Christian Academy in Waynesboro, and Briana Darren, a junior at Silver Bluff High School, both wanted to volunteer at the event.

“I came out to volunteer to help those in need who need food because we don’t know what they’re going through,” said Waltower.

“I came to volunteer because I love helping people and i want to make sure they’re fed and everything’s okay,” added Darren.

More than 300 families received food at each site.
