A man condemned for a double murder in 1990 met his end in Florida on Tuesday, marking the 13th execution for the state this year and setting a new annual record.

Victor Tony Jones, aged 64, was executed by lethal injection at precisely 6:13 p.m. at Florida State Prison, situated near Starke, as reported by Gov. Ron DeSantis’s office.

Jones started his day at 4:30 a.m., later spending time with a spiritual advisor, according to officials. He had no other visitors throughout the day. Authorities noted he was cooperative and selected fried chicken, collard greens, and sweet tea for his last meal.

When offered the chance for any final words, Jones replied, “No, sir,” relayed Alex Lanfranconi, a spokesperson for DeSantis, to The Associated Press. Lanfranconi also confirmed that the three-drug protocol was administered without any issues.

This execution marked Florida’s 13th this year. Previously, 59-year-old Curtis Windom was executed late last month, and 63-year-old David Pittman followed earlier this month.

Leading the nation, Florida has executed more individuals than any other state this year, with Texas and South Carolina each conducting four. Florida’s previous high was eight in 2014, following the reinstatement of capital punishment in 1976.

Nationwide, 30 people have been executed so far in 2025, surpassing last year’s total of 25. The last time the U.S. saw more was 2014, when 35 executions were carried out.
