JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — The Johnson City Rotary Club unveiled a new “Peace Pole” on Tuesday at Rotary Park.

The monument is part of an international initiative designed to remind community members to “cultivate peace in thought, word, and action,” serving as a symbol of humanity’s collective aspiration for a peaceful, harmonious world in unity with creation, as stated by the movement’s website.

Along with the unveiling, families picnicked in the park and heard from local leaders and Rotary Club members.

According to Cyrus Fees, President of Johnson City’s Rotary Club, as reported by News Channel 11, the pole displays the phrase “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in eight languages, which is a hallmark of the international movement.

“Given today’s climate of significant divisiveness, the need for peace is greater than ever,” he stated. “Having this monument now serves as a significant symbol for the city. The cooperation from the City of Johnson City has been crucial in bringing this to fruition. It’s a wonderful initiative for the city to promote peace.”

Fees said that Rotary Park was the perfect place to place the Peace Pole because it aligns with what the club stands for.

“We believed this was the ideal location for the Peace Pole, as it encapsulates the promotion of peace, a core mission of Rotary International. Consequently, it seemed like the perfect site for this symbol.”

Rotary Park is located at 1001 N Broadway St. in Johnson City.
