CHICAGO (WGN) A significant protest ensued in downtown Chicago on Tuesday evening, attracting hundreds who were reacting to the recent deployment of ICE and federal agents within the city and its surrounding areas.

Demonstrators occupied a portion of a westbound lane on Wacker Drive close to Michigan Avenue. The event was organized by groups such as the Chicago Teachers Union, the Coalition Against the Trump Agenda, and United Working Families, all expressing their opposition to the Trump administration’s recent decision to send federal agents to Chicago.

“I’m shocked by the treatment of immigrants and how they’re being detained without proper warrants. People are left in the dark about their relatives, with guns involved. I’m appalled. This isn’t what America stands for,” stated protester Teresa Exner.

This demonstration unfolds as President Donald Trump declared that federal troops would soon be deployed to Chicago. Additionally, ICE has requested 100 National Guard troops to assist in managing recent demonstrations that have escalated.

Federal authorities describe the ongoing operation, named Operation Midway Blitz, as an attempt to apprehend what they refer to as “the worst of the worst” undocumented immigrants for the sake of public safety.

“Wake up! This is extremely serious,” urged protester Rosemarie Pinkos. “Having lived this long, I never imagined witnessing this moment in our country.”

In a social media post, Greg Bovino, Commander at Large of the U.S. Border Patrol, said:

“TO THE BOATS! Swift in, execute mission, swift out. We will use every resource and tactic to put those who violate our laws on notice that we are coming for you!”

“I urge Illinoisans, don’t take the bait. There is no emergency in Chicago. Don’t help him create one,” Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul said.

While Trump did not give a specific timeline for the National Guard’s arrival, he said it would be “soon.” Demonstrators in downtown Chicago say they plan to remain in the streets for hours.
