7-Year-Old Boy Dies After Getting Head Stuck in Car Window, Mother Found Passed Out

A Georgia woman is behind bars after police say her 7-year-old son died earlier this year, while she was passed out inside her car.

Kandice Keiamber Grace is being charged with second-degree murder and second-degree cruelty to children, as confirmed by the Atlanta Police Department.

Authorities reported that on April 6, Grace was found unconscious in her vehicle in front of a residence on the 300 block of Scott Street Southwest in Atlanta. Upon arrival, police discovered her son, named Mazi Simmons, with his head stuck in a rear window of the car.

According to an arrest warrant obtained by Channel 2 Action News, emergency responders transported the child to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, where he was declared deceased.

According to the Fulton County Medical Examiner, the victim’s cause of death has been listed as an accidental strangulation.

Police found two other children inside the vehicle. Both were unharmed.

A witness reportedly informed investigators that the night prior to the incident, Grace had come to his home and left her three children in the car while visiting.

Grace’s visit was brief, and the next morning, the witness discovered Mazi with his head trapped in the window and immediately contacted the authorities.

On August 8, toxicology tests revealed that Grace had opioids and marijuana in her system when the incident occurred. She confessed to investigators that she lost consciousness multiple times while in the vehicle, leaving her unable to supervise the children.

Grace remains behind bars without bail.

Meanwhile, a GoFundMe fundraiser indicated that Mazzi “brought sunshine into every room with his energy, his sweet spirit, and that unforgettable smile.”
