NHS 'call 999' warning on Covid-19 vaccine side effects

Those opting for a Covid-19 vaccination this winter may experience some side effects, including rare severe ones that could require a visit to A&E. Vaccinations play a vital role in strengthening the immune system against viruses and are especially advised during the colder seasons.

This recommendation is because viruses such as Covid-19 evolve over time, leading to reduced immunity. Although vaccination isn’t mandatory for everyone, it is generally recommended for individuals at higher risk of severe illness due to coronavirus.

The NHS usually advises the Covid-19 vaccine for people aged 75 and above, those residing in elderly care homes, or individuals with weakened immune systems from certain health conditions or treatments. Despite possible side effects and concerns, the vaccine is widely regarded as safe.

Side effects of Covid-19 vaccine

Not every recipient of a COVID-19 vaccine will experience side effects. However, NHS guidelines indicate some common side effects, such as:

  • Feeling achy
  • A headache
  • Feeling tired
  • A sore arm from the injection
  • Mild flu-like symptoms

Typically, these side effects are mild and should resolve within a week. The NHS recommends taking paracetamol to help ease these symptoms while recovering.

Nonetheless, a minority of people might encounter serious side effects. For example, a severe allergic reaction to the vaccine is possible for some individuals.

In such instances, the person administering the injection should be equipped to handle allergic reactions and provide immediate treatment. The NHS has also highlighted ‘rare’ instances of heart inflammation (myocarditis) resulting from the vaccine.

Symptoms of myocarditis can include:

  • Fatigue
  • Chest pain
  • Swelling in feet, legs, and ankles
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Shortness of breath
  • Light-headedness or dizziness

While symptoms from myocarditis can be discomforting, the NHS notes that most people who had it recovered following rest and simple treatments. In come cases, you may experience more serious symptoms, either immediately or a few days after being vaccinated, in which case it is advised to call 999 or go to A&E.

These serious symptoms can include:

  • Severe difficulty breathing
  • Heart palpitations, fast beating, or fluttering
  • Chest pain or a tight feeling in the chest
