Judge sets 14-day deadline for new prosecutor in Trump Georgia case or it will be dismissed

A Georgia judge has imposed a two-week deadline on a state agency to appoint a new prosecutor for the 2020 election interference case against President Trump and his allies or face dismissal of the case.

This decisive move from Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee follows a ruling by Georgia’s highest court last month, which halted Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’s involvement in the case.

Willis’s office was removed due to a “significant appearance of impropriety” related to her romantic involvement with a leading prosecutor on the case.

Judge McAfee stated that Georgia’s Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council must appoint a replacement; otherwise, he will dismiss the case for lack of prosecution within 14 days, allowing for the possibility of refiling the charges later.

Trump and over a dozen allies were indicted with racketeering charges in 2023, accused of conspiring to overturn former President Biden’s 2020 election victory in Georgia. Trump and most of the defendants have entered not guilty pleas.
