A man is in custody after a multi-hour standoff on the steps of Los Angeles City Hall, according to LAPD Media Relations.
A call was received around 4:08 p.m. regarding a vehicle positioned on the steps of City Hall, located near Broadway and just south of First Street in downtown Los Angeles.
Authorities reported that the man inside was unwilling to exit and was holding what appeared to be an oxygen tank, along with two handmade signs. One sign read, “Don’t Want To Hurt No Body,” and the other declared, “I NEED UR HELP D TRUMP U.S. VET.”
Individuals in the vicinity, including those within City Hall, were evacuated as a safety measure. Officials informed KTLA that the areas surrounding City Hall were cordoned off while the incident was ongoing.
After about two hours, officials were able to de-escalate the situation. The man surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass released an updated statement on X:
“The suspect outside of City Hall is now in custody, and the LAPD bomb squad is present at the scene. Gratitude goes to all the courageous first responders who handled the situation with both compassion and urgency.”
Sky5 was overhead.
