ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. (WJHL) — Covered Bridge Park welcomed dozens of costumed canines on Sunday for Barktoberfest.

Originally started as a fundraiser, the event organized by Riverside Taphouse and Main Street Elizabethton has evolved over the last five years into a joyful occasion dedicated to the community’s beloved dogs, noted Courtney Bean, the Main Street director for the City of Elizabethton.

“Nowadays, it’s all about celebrating our community, highlighting our pet-friendly downtown, and of course, our dogs,” expressed Bean. “We adore our pets and the households they belong to.”

Bean shared that this year’s event saw a record-breaking turnout and was bustling with attendees. Following a ceremonial toast, the “Strut Your Mutt” parade launched a day full of activities, with the “Best Trick” and costume contests being popular annual highlights.

“Elizabethton’s downtown area is exceptionally accommodating to pets, and today is all about celebrating that,” she stated. “Moreover, we love to see everyone bringing their pets downtown, as we aim for it to be a welcoming space for pets and their owners.”

“There’s a ton of dogs here, so how can you not be happy?”
