SAVANNAH, Ga. () — This week marks the opening of a costume exhibit at the Telfair Museums, showcasing garments worn by actress Glenn Close. The display, titled “The Art of the Character: Highlights from the Glenn Close Costume Collection,” will feature these iconic pieces.

News 3 interviewed Elyse Gernstenecker, the curator of decorative arts, regarding the exhibit. “This exhibition originates from the Elizabeth Sage Historic Costume Collection at Indiana University. Glenn Close collaborated with them to curate an ongoing collection that boasts over 800 pieces from her films. What we’re displaying is just a small portion of this expansive collection.”

David Brenneman, the Telfair Museums’ Executive Director and CEO, expressed his enthusiasm. “Visitors will be captivated and inspired by exploring the impressive handiwork that this multifaceted collection reveals from the illustrious career of a celebrated American actress.”

Throughout her acclaimed career, Close has worked hand-in-hand with costume designers to authentically bring her characters to life. As Close explains, “What a character wears is fundamental to understanding who that character is. Just like a puppet lifeless without its strings, a costume on a hanger awaits its transformation.”

The collection showcases pieces from celebrated costume designers such as Anthony Powell (101 Dalmatians and 102 Dalmatians), Ann Roth (The Stepford Wives), and James Acheson (Dangerous Liaisons), highlighting the skill of costume workshops like Barbara Matera Ltd (101 and 102 Dalmatians).

Gernstenecker highlights the detailed work involved in the more than 50 ensembles presented. “Our team crafted unique paper wigs specifically for this exhibit.” The meticulous attention extends to jewelry, hats, gloves, and shoes.

“The Art of the Character: Highlights from the Glann Close Costume Collection” will be on display at the Telfair Museums through February 2026. It is for all ages. Click here to find out more.
