CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The Illini, under the direction of Bret Bielema, lead the nation in forced fumbles, but defensive lapses continue to worry the coaching staff.

Despite recording nine missed tackles during their game against Purdue, the Illini managed a 43-27 victory, according to Pro Football Focus. Post-game, Bielema commended his team’s resilience, noting that their ability to overcome issues like missed tackles is a testament to progress, something that might not have been possible in previous seasons.

However, there is less room for error than ever before when welcoming the No. 1 team in the country to town.

“In the last few games, we’ve allowed plays that break through for scores,” Bielema remarked. “Just like during Saturday’s game, in two of our last three defensive drives, they advanced but we stopped them from scoring. We managed to keep the ball in front, even though they gained some ground. Fortunately, we’re getting healthier. Aaron is gaining better insight into the players, and ultimately, we need to play exceptionally well.”

Illinois ranks second nationwide in fumble recoveries, showcasing the defense’s ability to compensate for the explosive plays they concede. Meanwhile, Ohio State averages nearly 300 rushing yards per game and boasts a 26-of-48 success rate on third down conversions.

No. 17 Illinois hosts Ohio State on Saturday, October 11 at 11 a.m. at Gies Memorial Stadium, broadcast on Fox.
