GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Nineteen-year-old Andrew Glenn Shaffer was taken into custody last night, facing charges of sexual battery following allegations that he encouraged the victim to consume shots before assaulting her while she was unconscious in his dormitory.

An officer from the University of Florida Police Department documented that on September 24, Shaffer escorted the victim to his dorm at Honors Village after she consumed three to five shots. The victim disclosed to the officer that Shaffer persuaded her to drink, and when he proposed sex, she declined.

She recounted that upon returning to his dorm room, she laid on his bed and fell asleep, rendered unconscious due to intoxication. Upon waking up, she was disoriented to find herself wearing Shaffer’s shirt with her clothes disordered. Shaffer then questioned her about taking a Plan B pill, leading her to question his intentions, especially since she couldn’t recall the incident.

The victim showed the officer Snapchat exchanges where she inquired if Shaffer withdrew during intercourse and received a response, “I don’t think so.” When asked about using protection, Shaffer indicated no condom wrapper was found in his room. Shaffer conceded to knowing the victim had refused and acknowledged that he was in the wrong, admitting his awareness of the situation. To address potential pregnancy concerns, he transferred $50 to the victim via Venmo for emergency contraception, as documented in their Snapchat conversation and Venmo transaction.

Following the Miranda warning, Shaffer acknowledged the sexual encounter, claiming it was consensual, although he struggled to recall the night’s events. His narrative shifted upon reviewing the Snapchat evidence, confirming his involvement.

Charged with sexual battery on a physically helpless individual, Shaffer’s record lacks previous local offenses. Judge Aymer “Buck” Curtin ordered him detained without bail, pending a State Attorney’s office motion seeking to hold him in custody until trial. Should the motion be denied, bail will be set during that hearing.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
