Surveillance video captures the instance when 60-year-old Artemios Mintzas reportedly started shooting from his apartment window in Sydney’s inner west on Sunday night, creating chaos as bullets struck vehicles, law enforcement, and structures.
Mintzas was refused bail at Burwood Courthouse over 18 charges of shooting with intent to murder, and seven firearm-related offences.
Mintzas allegedly fired at people and cars at random on Georges River Road in Croydon Park.
When officers reached the location, a shot hit the windshield of their vehicle. An officer armed themselves and approached the threat, but had to fall back.
The tactical unit arrived shortly after for backup, armed with guns and shields, as people were trapped in their cars.
The ordeal lasted for more than an hour and a half before the alleged gunman was taken into custody.
Aysegul, a kebab shop owner, told 9News the alleged gunman was her customer just moments before he opened fire.
“He even said hi to me just before the scene, about 20 minutes before, smiling,” she said.
“I was shocked when I found out in the morning that it was him. He seemed so normal to me.
“At first we didn’t think there were gunshots, we thought like there was like fireworks and that.
“We were hiding in the kitchen. It was a scary night. Very lucky that he just didn’t come downstairs.”
Detectives are still investigating.
