Gold Coast suburb gets CCTV upgrade amid rising crime concerns

Burleigh Heads will see a significant expansion of its CCTV network, following concerns regarding increasing crime rates in the beachside Gold Coast suburb.

The Queensland government has allocated $500,000 for the installation of 25 new CCTV cameras, more than doubling the existing network from 21 to 46 units.

The new cameras will be strategically positioned to address current blind spots, extending coverage to include parks, the Light Rail platform, and the Esplanade.

The Esplanade location is particularly significant, as it was the site where 18-year-old Cameron Duce died last year after an alleged assault.

The expansion comes in response to growing community concerns about safety in Burleigh, particularly as the suburb’s nightlife has intensified.

“Burleigh’s been under seige for a long time. In fact, many are calling it ‘BRAWL-ie’,” Burleigh MP Hermann Vorster said.

“It’s also affected our traders as well with many telling me their young staffers are unwilling to turn up for shifts because they feel so unsafe.

“Council CCTV monitoring team can see danger as it unfolds and secure police resources to deal with small problems before they escalate to potential catastrophe.”

The upgraded CCTV system will be monitored around the clock, Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate has confirmed.
